As of December 2022, The Big Cat Public Safety Act was passed by our U.S. President. The act will have a significant impact on the lives of big cats and the people who come into contact with them.
What is the Big Cat Public Safety Act?
The Big Cat Public Safety Act is a piece of legislation signed to protect both people and big cats, such as lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars + more.
By banning the possession of big cats as pets and use in traveling circuses and other exhibitions, the act will help ensure that big cats are not exploited for human entertainment anymore!
Facilities that currently keep big cats will need to meet minimum care standards and to take steps to ensure the safety of the public and their employees.
The Need for the Big Cat Public Safety Act
Big cats are majestic, powerful creatures that deserve to live in the wild, where they can roam freely and hunt for their own food.
Unfortunately, many big cats have been kept captive as pets, or used for entertainment purposes for profit, which can be harmful to both the cats and the people who come into contact with them.
In recent years, there have been a number of incidents involving big cats escaping from their enclosures and injuring or killing people/pets.
There have also been reports of big cats being mistreated and kept in conditions that are far from ideal.
What the Big Cat Public Safety Act Requires
Sometimes when wild animals have been kept captive, they have the unfortunate situation of being too domesticated to be released into the wild, but too wild to be domesticated.
The Big Cat Public Safety Act requires facilities that keep big cats to meet minimum standards of care, such as providing adequate food, water, and veterinary care, as well as having secure enclosures to prevent them from escaping.
The act will also require facilities to take steps to ensure the safety of the public and their employees, such as posting warning signs and having a plan in place to respond to emergencies.
Additionally, the act will ban the possession of big cats as pets and their use in traveling circuses and other exhibitions.
